aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Submit documents to the government on another person\u2019s behalf<\/span><\/li><\/ul><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check whether a person is really an attorney by asking them for:<\/span><\/p><ol><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their full name<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their bar number<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The state where they are barred<\/span><\/li><\/ol><p>\u00a0<\/p><p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/content\/dam\/aba\/administrative\/immigration\/fightnotariofraud\/statewebsitesforattorneyregistration.pdf\">Look them up<\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in that state\u2019s directory of attorneys.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check whether the attorney you are about to hire has a good record<\/span><\/p><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.americanbar.org\/content\/dam\/aba\/administrative\/immigration\/fightnotariofraud\/statewebsitesforattorneyregistration.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look them up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in their state bar\u2019s disciplinary database<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.justice.gov\/eoir\/list-of-currently-disciplined-practitioners\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Look them up <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the EOIR\u2019s (Executive Office for Immigration Review) disciplinary database<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Google your attorney\u2019s name to make sure there aren\u2019t bad news stories about them and their firm<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Check whether the attorney you\u2019re about to hire is who they say they are by making sure that the email address and phone number they use to communicate with you is the same contact information listed online\/on their website\/and in other official sources, such as the state directory of attorneys.<\/span><\/li><\/ul>\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/section>\n\t\t\t\t<section class=\"elementor-section You might need to ask for the contract to be translated into the language you understand best.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure you understand the scope of representation the attorney is promising you.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your attorney signs this contract before you pay them.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your immigration attorney gives you a copy of the contract.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Every time you make a payment to your attorney, make sure their office gives you a receipt showing:<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The date on which you made the payment<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The amount you paid<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A description of the service you paid for<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: Keep all these receipts for your records. Ideally take a picture of them and send them to a trusted friend so that there is an electronic version preserved even if the hard copies are lost\/destroyed\/inaccessible.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><\/ul><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Maintain communication with your attorney<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Call, email, and message your attorney to make sure you understand what work your attorney is doing for you at all times.<\/span><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you have questions about your case, make sure your attorney answers your questions.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your attorney gives you a copy of the documents they submit to the government in your case.<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: A client has a right to receive a copy of their file from their attorney for free. Even if your case is over, you have a right to receive a copy of your file for your former attorney for free. In most states, even if you haven\u2019t paid your attorney everything you owe them, you have a right to receive a copy of your file for free. An attorney cannot charge you money for a copy of your case file.<\/span><\/li><\/ul><\/li><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Make sure your attorney gives you a copy of the documents the government sends them about your case<\/span><ul><li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note: It is especially important to keep receipts that the government sends you about your case. You will need these receipts to show proof that you have submitted an application to the government and what application you submitted.
