Stop and Think Twice Before You Travel Outside the U.S.

Speak to an immigration attorney before you travel
Why? Some green card holders, people with work visas and others who are not U.S. citizens have been arrested at the airport or at the border coming into the U.S.
But I've traveled before, why is it a problem now?
- The Trump administration wants to deport many immigrants
- Every time you return to the U.S., immigration agents check your history
If you answer YES to any of these questions, it's very important to speak to an immigration attorney BEFORE you travel
- Have you ever been stopped or arrested by the police or other officer?
- Have you ever been convicted of any crime? Small or big crimes are possible problems.
- Have you ever been stopped or arrested by ICE in the U.S. or at the border?
- Have you ever expressed opinions that the Trump administration may think are against U.S. interests?
I answered "NO" to these questions but what else can I do to be safe?
Speak to an immigration attorney
- Let the attorney know your dates of travel
- Make sure you can reach the attorney if needed
- Make sure you have the attorney’s number with you or memorized
Find a reputable immigration legal services provider near you.
If ICE arrests you:
- Ask to speak to your attorney
- Don’t sign any forms you don’t understandå
If ICE asks you to return with a document:
- Speak to an immigration attorney before you return the document
How You Can Prepare For a CBP Border Processing
Practice device hygiene!
CBP may search your electronic devices and social media presence. You can prepare by turning off your devices and disabling biometrics. You can also audit your online footprint.
Ensure you have all necessary travel documents
All travelers must travel with a valid photo ID issued by a government agency and U.S. or foreign passports with valid visas.
Be prepared for lengthy questioning and delays
CBP may question travelers about the basic details of their trip. While inappropriate, they may also question travelers about their political or religious views. Deciding to answer, or not, may result in additional questioning, lengthy delays, and even denial of entry for non-U.S. citizens abroad.
Remain calm and respectful with CBP officers
Be prepared to answer CBP inquiries truthfully, briefly, and politely. You can practice beforehand!
Honest but brief answers are the way to go
Remember, CBP officers are not your friends. Whether they come off as hostile or friendly, they can use the information you provide them against you or others.
