Temporary Protected Status – Sudan

Судан

TPS Extended Through October 19, 2026

On January 10, 2025, DHS extended Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for 18 months for eligible Sudanese who currently hold TPS, beginning on April 20, 2025, and ending on October 19, 2026. This extension allows eligible TPS beneficiaries to retain TPS and related work authorization through October 19, 2026, so long as they re-register during the 60-day re-registration period (detailed below).

TPS предоставляет временный иммиграционный статус, защиту от депортации и разрешение на работу в США.

Current Sudanese TPS holders (who have lived in the U.S. since August 16, 2023) can apply for an extension of TPS and work authorization. The announcement did not expand TPS to include Sudanese who came to the U.S. and have lived here after August 16, 2023.

Sudanese who currently have TPS must apply for an extension (re-register) by filing a TPS application (Форма I-821), Application for Temporary Protected Status, by March 18, 2025 (when the 60-day re-registration window closes).

To obtain proof of your TPS-related work authorization extension through October 19, 2026, you must file an application, (Форма I-765), Application for Employment Authorization, for a new work permit valid through October 19, 2026.

If you timely re-register for TPS and apply for a new work permit, while you are waiting to receive your new work permit, your current work permit is automatically extended in two ways:

  1. Your current work permit is automatically extended and valid through April 19, 2026; and if your employer asks, you can show them your work permit and this Federal Register notice; and/or
  2. If you file for a new work permit through March 18, 2025, your work permit is automatically extended for 540 days from the “Card Expires” date on your current work permit, and if your employer asks, you can show them your work permit and the receipt notice you received when you applied for a new work permit (Form I-797, Notice of Action).

Yes, if you want your TPS status and work authorization to continue through October 19, 2026, you must timely apply for an extension of your TPS within the 60-day re-registration period ending March 18, 2025.

You can file an application for work authorization (Form I-765) with your TPS application or separately later, if your TPS application is still pending or has already been approved. DHS recommends filing your work authorization as soon as possible.
