TPS Available Through May 20, 2025
On September 21, 2023, Inihayag ng DHS an extension and an expansion of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Afghanistan. DHS expanded TPS to include Afghans who have lived in the U.S. as of September 20, 2023. TPS will be available for an additional 18 months to eligible Afghans through May 20, 2025. TPS provides temporary immigration status, protection from deportation, and permission to work.
Current Afghan TPS holders (who have lived in the U.S. since March 15, 2022) can apply for an extension of TPS and work authorization. In addition, TPS applicants from Afghanistan who have lived in the U.S. since September 20, 2023, are now also eligible to apply for TPS and work authorization for the first time.
On September 25, 2023, DHS posted a Paunawa ng Federal Register with information about the extension of TPS for Afghanistan and the expansion of the program to include Afghans in the U.S. as of September 20, 2023. Afghans who currently have TPS must apply for an extension by filing a TPS application (Form I-821) between September 25, 2023, and November 24, 2023.
First-time applicants must file a TPS application form between September 25, 2023, and May 20, 2025. To apply for a work permit, applicants must file an application for employment authorization (Form-I-765).
By filing for an extension of TPS during the 60-day application period, between September 25, 2023, and November 24, 2023, TPS holders who currently have TPS and work authorization until November 20, 2023, will receive an automatic extension of work permission until November 20, 2024.
