TPS Available Through May 3, 2025
On September 5, 2023, DHS ilitangaza an extension and an expansion of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for South Sudan. DHS expanded TPS to include South Sudanese who have lived in the U.S. as of September 4, 2023. TPS will be available for an additional 18 months to eligible South Sudanese through May 3, 2025. TPS provides temporary immigration status, protection from deportation, and permission to work.
Current South Sudanese TPS holders (who have lived in the U.S. since March 1, 2022) can apply for an extension of TPS and work authorization. In addition, TPS applicants from South Sudan who have lived in the U.S. since September 4, 2023, are now also eligible to apply for TPS and work authorization for the first time.
On September 6, 2023, DHS posted a Taarifa ya Usajili wa Shirikisho with information about the extension of TPS for South Sudan and the expansion of the program to include South Sudanese in the U.S. as of September 4, 2023. South Sudanese who currently have TPS must apply for an extension by filing a TPS application (Fomu ya I-821) between September 6, 2023, and November 6, 2023.
First-time TPS applicants must file a TPS application form between September 6, 2023, and May 3, 2025. To apply for a work permit, applicants must apply for employment authorization (Fomu-I-765).
By filing for an extension of TPS during the 60-day application period, between September 6, 2023, and November 6, 2023, TPS holders who currently have TPS and work authorization until November 3, 2023, will receive an automatic extension of work permission until November 3, 2024.
