TPS Available Through September 17, 2024
On January 12, 2023, DHS ayaa ku dhawaaqday an extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia. DHS also expanded TPS to include Somalis in the U.S. as of January 11, 2023. TPS will be available for an additional 18 months to eligible Somalis through September 17, 2024. TPS protects from deportation and permission to work in the U.S.
A previous TPS program for Somalia provided TPS and employment authorization until March 18, 2023. Now, Somalis living in the U.S. since January 11, 2023, also are eligible to apply for TPS.
DHS issued a Ogeysiiska Diiwaangelinta Federaalka announcing the extension of TPS for Somalia and the expansion of the program to include individuals from Somalia who were living in the U.S. as of January 11, 2023. Somalis who currently have TPS must apply for an extension by filing a TPS application (Foomka I-821) between March 13, 2023, and May 12, 2023.
First-time TPS applicants from Somalia must file a TPS application form between March 13, 2023, and September 17, 2024. To apply for employment authorization, applicants must apply for employment authorization (Foomka-I-765).
If you file for an extension of TPS by May 12, 2023, your work authorization will automatically be extended until March 17, 2024.
