Somalia
TPS Available Through March 17, 2026
On July 22, 2024, DHS announced an extension of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Somalia. DHS also expanded TPS to include Somalis in the U.S. as of July 12, 2024. TPS will be available for an additional 18 months to eligible Somalis through March 17, 2026. TPS protects from deportation and permission to work in the U.S.
A previous TPS program for Somalia provided TPS and employment authorization until September 17, 2024. Now, Somalis living in the U.S. since July 12, 2024, also are eligible to apply for TPS.
DHS issued a Federal Register notice announcing the extension of TPS for Somalia and the expansion of the program to include individuals from Somalia who were living in the U.S. as of July 12, 2024. Somalis who currently have TPS must apply for an extension by filing a TPS application (Form I-821) between July 22, 2024 through September 20, 2024.
First-time TPS applicants from Somalia must file a TPS application form between July 22, 2024, and March 17, 2026. To apply for employment authorization, applicants must apply for employment authorization (Form-I-765).
If you file for an extension of TPS by September 20, 2024, your work authorization will automatically be extended until September 17, 2025.
You can apply for work authorization (Form I-765) with your TPS application or before the end of the TPS registration period. Due to the processing backlogs at USCIS, DHS recommends filing your work authorization as soon as possible.
Remember – it’s important not to travel outside the U.S. without applying for and receiving permission to travel, advance parole, and consulting with a trusted immigration attorney.
